One of Sandro's most profound yet unappreciated paintings I think. A swaying ballet of deference between angel and woman: He lowers himself so as not to frighten her. She holds him at arm's length, unable to accept the gigantic task asked of her. "I'm just an ordinary girl! How could I do this? There must be some mistake!" The angel insists, gently, and won't go away. The transaction happening here is very Italian, but eternally human too. So many things going on here and Sandro caught them all
